La spiritualità non è una parte della vita / Spirituality Is Not Just One Part of Life
Dal satsang del sabato con Gauranga Sundara Prabhu: lavoro, bellezza, servizio e il coraggio di continuare a muoversi / From Saturday satsang with Gauranga Sundara Prabhu: work, beauty, service and the courage to keep moving forward
Edizione bilingue intrecciata / Interwoven bilingual edition
Ci sono incontri spirituali che iniziano con un canto / Some spiritual gatherings begin with a song, proseguono con una preghiera / continue with a prayer, e quasi senza accorgersene arrivano alle domande più ordinarie della nostra vita / and almost without noticing arrive at the most ordinary questions of our lives.
Che cosa significa lavorare? / What does it mean to work?
Che cosa significa vedere qualcosa di bello? / What does it mean to see something beautiful?
Come si continua ad avanzare quando la vita sembra riportarci continuamente verso le stesse abitudini? / How do we keep moving forward when life seems constantly to pull us back toward the same habits?
It was not simply a lecture / Non è stata semplicemente una lezione.
It was not simply kirtan / Non è stato semplicemente kirtan.
It was, rather, a small community thinking aloud about spiritual life / È stata, piuttosto, una piccola comunità che rifletteva ad alta voce sulla vita spirituale.
Continuare a muoversi / Keep moving
Uno dei primi pensieri condivisi dopo il canto riguardava un’immagine molto semplice / One of the first thoughts shared after the chanting concerned a very simple image: il sole sorge a est e tramonta a ovest / the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
Se ci fermiamo / If we stop, prima o poi arriva l’oscurità / sooner or later darkness catches up with us.
Da quella immagine è nata una frase ripetuta durante l’incontro:
continuare a muoversi / keep moving.
Non necessariamente muoversi nello spazio / Not necessarily moving through space.
Non accumulare esperienze / Not collecting experiences.
Non correre più velocemente / Not running faster.
Muoversi interiormente / Moving inwardly.
Continuare a imparare / To keep learning.
Continuare a interrogarsi / To keep questioning ourselves.
Continuare a correggere la direzione / To keep correcting our direction.
In qualunque percorso spirituale esiste forse un rischio particolare / In every spiritual path there is perhaps a particular danger: trasformare ciò che inizialmente era vivo in qualcosa di automatico / turning what was once alive into something automatic.
Si ripetono le stesse formule / We repeat the same formulas, frequentiamo gli stessi incontri / attend the same meetings, conosciamo le parole corrette / know the correct words.
Ma continuiamo davvero a muoverci? / But are we still moving?
Non una parte della vita / Not just one part of life
Un altro partecipante ha raccontato un episodio apparentemente lontanissimo dalla spiritualità / Another participant described an experience that seemed far removed from spirituality.
Si trovava a Londra / He was in London, impegnato in una presentazione professionale legata a denaro e finanziamenti / giving a professional presentation about money and finance.
E proprio durante quella situazione gli è tornata alla mente un’immagine spirituale / And right in the middle of that situation a spiritual image returned to his mind: l’idea di stare cercando “vetri rotti” / the idea of searching for “broken glass”.
Il contrasto è quasi cinematografico / The contrast is almost cinematic.
Una sala professionale / A professional room.
Numeri / Numbers.
Finanza / Finance.
Persone che ascoltano / People listening.
E improvvisamente una domanda interiore / And suddenly an inner question:
Che cosa sto cercando davvero? / What am I really searching for?
Da qui è emersa forse la frase più forte dell’intera serata:
non basta fare della coscienza di Krishna una parte della propria vita / it is not enough to make Krishna consciousness one part of our life.
Occorre permetterle di entrare in ogni parte della vita / We must allow it to enter every part of life.
È un’affermazione profondamente religiosa / It is a profoundly religious statement, ma può essere letta anche in modo universale / yet it can also be understood universally.
Se abbiamo dei valori / If we have values, quei valori esistono soltanto nel momento della meditazione? / do those values exist only when we meditate?
Se diciamo di credere nella compassione / If we say we believe in compassion, essa scompare quando siamo al lavoro? / does it disappear when we go to work?
Se cerchiamo una forma di consapevolezza / If we seek awareness, vale soltanto durante una pratica spirituale / does it matter only during spiritual practice, oppure deve modificare anche il modo in cui rispondiamo a un’email / or should it also change the way we answer an email, spendiamo denaro / spend money, affrontiamo un collega / deal with a colleague, reagiamo a un problema / react to a problem?
La spiritualità diventa interessante proprio quando smette di essere un compartimento / Spirituality becomes interesting precisely when it stops being a compartment.
Soffrire per la sofferenza dell’altro / To feel another person’s suffering
Durante le condivisioni è emersa anche l’espressione sanscrita para-duḥkha-duḥkhī / The Sanskrit expression para-duḥkha-duḥkhī also emerged during the conversation.
In termini semplici / In simple terms, significa diventare sensibili alla sofferenza degli altri / it means becoming sensitive to the suffering of others.
Non soltanto sapere che un’altra persona soffre / Not merely knowing that another person is suffering.
Lasciare che quella sofferenza ci riguardi / Allowing that suffering to matter to us.
È un’idea che appartiene alla tradizione vaisnava / It is an idea rooted in the Vaishnava tradition, ma che incontra immediatamente molte altre vie spirituali / yet immediately resonates with many other spiritual traditions.
Compassione / Compassion.
Misericordia / Mercy.
Empatia / Empathy.
Responsabilità / Responsibility.
Parole diverse / Different words, ma forse la stessa domanda / perhaps the same question:
quanto siamo ancora capaci di uscire da noi stessi? / how capable are we of stepping outside ourselves?
Krishna, Vishnu e una porta / Krishna, Vishnu and a doorway
La conversazione è poi diventata più propriamente teologica / The conversation then became more explicitly theological.
Un partecipante ha posto una domanda classica / A participant raised a classic question: se Krishna è considerato l’origine degli avatāra / if Krishna is considered the source of the avatars, perché in alcune rappresentazioni viene presentato come avatāra di Vishnu? / why is he sometimes described as an avatar of Vishnu?
La spiegazione proposta durante il satsang ha utilizzato l’immagine di una porta / doorway.
Gli avatāra possono essere descritti come manifestazioni che giungono attraverso Vishnu / The avatars may be described as manifestations appearing through Vishnu.
Chi vede soltanto la porta / Someone who sees only the doorway può pensare che ciò che appare attraverso quella porta abbia origine lì / may assume that whatever comes through it originates there.
Ma la teologia gaudiya vaisnava legge Krishna come Personalità originale di Dio / the original Personality of Godhead.
Per chi non appartiene a questa tradizione / For someone outside this tradition, può sembrare una distinzione specialistica / this may sound like a specialist distinction.
Eppure dietro quella discussione esiste un tema molto più ampio / Yet behind that discussion lies a much broader theme:
quanto della realtà giudichiamo soltanto dalla porta attraverso cui ci appare? / How much of reality do we judge only by the doorway through which it appears?
La bellezza non è separata / Beauty is not separate
Da Krishna e Vishnu la discussione è passata quasi naturalmente alla bellezza / From Krishna and Vishnu, the conversation moved almost naturally toward beauty.
Un partecipante ha suggerito una riflessione affascinante / One participant offered a striking reflection: vedere la bellezza come collegata al divino potrebbe modificare il modo in cui trattiamo il mondo / seeing beauty as connected with the divine might change the way we treat the world.
Ciò che riconosciamo come bello / What we recognise as beautiful, forse siamo meno inclini a distruggerlo / we may be less inclined to destroy.
La risposta di Gauranga Sundara Prabhu ha riportato il discorso alle qualità tradizionalmente attribuite a Krishna / Gauranga Sundara Prabhu’s response brought the discussion back to qualities traditionally attributed to Krishna:
bellezza / beauty,
ricchezza / wealth,
fama / fame,
forza / strength,
conoscenza / knowledge.
Quando incontriamo queste qualità nel mondo / When we encounter these qualities in the world, esse possono essere considerate riflessi limitati / they may be understood as limited reflections di qualcosa che, nella prospettiva religiosa, appartiene pienamente al divino / of something that, within this religious vision, belongs fully to the divine.
È stata utilizzata l’immagine della scintilla e del fuoco / spark and fire.
La scintilla possiede luce e calore / The spark has light and heat.
Anche il fuoco possiede luce e calore / The fire also has light and heat.
La qualità può essere simile / The quality may be similar.
La misura non lo è / The magnitude is not.
È una metafora semplice / It is a simple metaphor, ma potente / yet powerful: ci invita a vedere ciò che ammiriamo senza trasformarlo necessariamente in un assoluto / it invites us to admire what we see without turning it into an absolute.
Il lavoro può diventare servizio? / Can work become service?
Forse la parte più concreta della serata è arrivata parlando di danza e lavoro / Perhaps the most practical part of the evening came through a conversation about dance and work.
Una partecipante ha raccontato che avrebbe iniziato un nuovo lavoro il lunedì successivo / A participant explained that she was about to begin a new job the following Monday.
E non ne aveva voglia / And she did not want to go.
Una frase terribilmente umana / A terribly human sentence.
Il pensiero correva invece alla danza / Her mind was on dance.
La risposta ricevuta ha ribaltato la prospettiva / The response shifted the perspective.
Il lavoro sostiene il corpo / Work sustains the body.
Il corpo permette di danzare / The body makes dancing possible.
La danza può diventare un’offerta / Dance can become an offering.
E allora persino il lavoro apparentemente estraneo alla spiritualità / Then even work that appears unrelated to spirituality può entrare in una catena di significato / can become part of a chain of meaning.
Non perché ogni occupazione diventi automaticamente sacra / Not because every job automatically becomes sacred, ma perché possiamo domandarci a che cosa serve ciò che facciamo / but because we can ask what our work ultimately supports.
È forse qui che il tema della serata ritorna con maggiore forza / Perhaps this is where the evening’s central theme returns most clearly:
la spiritualità non è una parte della vita / spirituality is not just one part of life.
Anche ciò che sembra lontano / Even what seems distant può essere collegato / can be connected.
Un satsang fatto anche di canto / A satsang also made of song
Sarebbe però sbagliato immaginare l’incontro come una conferenza accademica / It would be misleading to imagine the gathering as an academic lecture.
Una parte significativa è stata dedicata al maha-mantra / maha-mantra, al kirtan / kirtan e alla Gaura Arati / Gaura Arati.
Le persone si sono salutate / People greeted one another, hanno raccontato come stavano / shared how they were doing, qualcuno parlava dopo un’influenza / some were recovering from illness, qualcun altro raccontava la settimana appena trascorsa / others spoke about their week.
C’era chi partecipava in presenza / Some were physically present, chi attraverso Zoom / others joined through Zoom.
Persino i piccoli problemi tecnici della conclusione / Even the small technical problems near the end — un microfono troppo basso, una voce difficile da comprendere — facevano parte di quella normalità / were part of that ordinary reality.
Ed è forse proprio questa mescolanza a rendere interessante il satsang del sabato / Perhaps that mixture is precisely what makes the Saturday satsang interesting.
Non esiste una separazione netta fra insegnamento e vita / There is no sharp separation between teaching and life.
Prima si canta / First there is chanting.
Poi qualcuno racconta del lavoro / Then someone talks about work.
Qualcun altro pone una domanda su Krishna e Vishnu / Someone else asks about Krishna and Vishnu.
Un’altra persona parla della danza / Another speaks about dance.
Poi si canta di nuovo / Then the chanting begins again.
Il valore della continuità / The value of continuity
Forse, osservato dall’esterno, tutto questo potrebbe sembrare disordinato / From the outside, all of this might appear unstructured.
Ma c’è un filo / Yet there is a thread.
Keep moving / continuare a muoversi.
Non aspettare che ogni cosa sia perfetta / Do not wait for everything to become perfect.
Non aspettare di avere una vita completamente libera dal lavoro / Do not wait until life is completely free from work.
Non aspettare di capire ogni questione filosofica / Do not wait until every philosophical question has been solved.
Non aspettare di sentirsi sempre spiritualmente pronti / Do not wait until you always feel spiritually ready.
La pratica accade dentro la vita che abbiamo / Practice happens inside the life we actually have.
Con i nostri lavori / With our jobs.
Le nostre malattie / Our illnesses.
I nostri dubbi / Our doubts.
La nostra bellezza / Our beauty.
I nostri limiti / Our limitations.
Le nostre contraddizioni / Our contradictions.
E forse avanzare non significa trasformarsi improvvisamente in qualcun altro / Perhaps moving forward does not mean suddenly becoming someone else.
Potrebbe significare imparare a vedere diversamente ciò che già esiste / It may mean learning to see differently what is already there.
Una piccola domanda per il lettore / A small question for the reader
Non è necessario essere Hare Krishna / You do not need to be Hare Krishna per riconoscere la domanda che attraversa questo incontro / to recognise the question running through this gathering.
Qualunque sia il nostro percorso / Whatever our path may be:
ciò in cui diciamo di credere entra davvero nella nostra vita quotidiana? / does what we say we believe actually enter our daily life?
Oppure abbiamo costruito una stanza spirituale / Or have we built a spiritual room nella quale entriamo per qualche ora / that we enter for a few hours, prima di chiudere la porta / before closing the door e tornare alla cosiddetta vita reale? / and returning to so-called real life?
Forse il senso di una pratica spirituale non è costruire quella stanza / Perhaps the purpose of spiritual practice is not to build that room.
Forse è lasciare la porta aperta / Perhaps it is to leave the door open.
Finché il confine fra spiritualità e vita quotidiana diventa sempre meno netto / Until the boundary between spirituality and ordinary life becomes less and less rigid.
E continuiamo a muoverci / And we keep moving.
